Free Event: This CommUnity Sings Sunday, February 18, 2018, 3PM
Greensboro, NC – The Carolina Theatre of Greensboro is pleased to announce a new community event that is free for all ages, This CommUnity Sings, on Sunday, February 18, at 3PM.
This CommUnity Sings, a part of the Carolina Theatre’s 90th Anniversary festivities, invites singers and lovers of song at every skill level to gather at the Carolina Theatre for a musical commUNITY celebration. The goal of This CommUnity Sings is to fill the theatre and feature more than 1,000 voices singing Carolina in My Mind, Bohemian Rhapsody, and What a Wonderful World.
The This CommUnity Sings committee of organizers is chaired by volunteers Jessica Mashburn and Ogi Overman. “This event is in celebration of the 90th Anniversary of the Carolina Theatre and the beautiful diversity that we have here in our community,” says Mashburn. “Let’s come together and sing because ‘This CommUnity Sings!’”
Doors will open at 2PM with the Grimsley High School Blue Steel Drum Line and the North Carolina A&T University Cold Steel Drum Line, and emcee Eric Chilton to welcome guests. Singing will begin at 3PM. The audience will learn the songs first, led by Welborn E. Young, the Director of Choral Activities at UNC-G and the Artistic Director and Conductor of Bel Canto Company, and Ron Jones, the Fellowship Gospel Choir Director at NC A&T. Following the welcome and prep, the entire theatre will raise voices together.
This event is free and open to the public; no tickets are necessary. (The concessions stand will be open for those who wish to purchase snacks.) First come, first served. Gather your family, call your friends, get the band back together, and then join the commUNITY!
The core mission of This CommUnity Sings is to foster a sense of unity, harmony, oneness, cooperation and connectivity throughout Greensboro and Guilford County. By bringing together all the myriad elements of our community to create a harmonious whole, our hope is that this simple act will create a ripple effect that will spread not only throughout our town but also to other communities. Using the universal language of music,
we believe that this community sing-along will raise awareness that we are, indeed, one people and
will inspire others to understand that there is strength through diversity. #CommUnitySings
