Greensboro Downtown Parks, Inc. To Host Sensory-Friendly Movie Night in LeBauer Park
GREENSBORO, NC – Greensboro Downtown Parks, in collaboration with InFocus Advocacy, will pilot its first sensory-friendly movie night during a Spartan Cinema screening of Ferdinand (PG) on June 14th in LeBauer Park.
“We want all movie nights to be accessible to and inclusive of our entire community. This night will be a test-run of how we can create an experience in an environment better designed for people of all abilities,” stated Amanda Miller, Director of Programs & Marketing for Greensboro Downtown Parks. With the help of professionals and self-advocate consultants from InFocus, park staff have been working to develop this program as a first step in making improvements to the entire park experience.
While all movies currently feature closed-captioning this year, the sensory-friendly experience will include a variety of new design adaptations. GDPI will offer pre-screening access of the film for members of our community concerned about unique sensory triggers, as well as designated Calming Spaces for anyone experiencing stress or sensory overwhelm during the screening. On LeBauer’s Great Lawn, wheelchair-friendly paths will be established to allow for unfettered access to and from the center of the movie viewing area, rather than merely along the perimeter. Additionally, GDPI’s Park Ambassadors have been trained for how best to offer assistance that puts the park visitor’s dignity and respect for the expertise of their own lived experiences at the forefront.
As always, this movie night is free to attend and open to the entire public, thanks to UNC Greensboro’s sponsorship. The Great Lawn opens for seating at 5:00 PM, and the film will begin at sunset. Feel free to come early, grab a spot, and enjoy concessions from Ghassan’s Fresh Mediterranean Eats, PorterHouse Burger Company, Kona Ice, and Over the Rainbow Kettle Corn.
