Greensboro Symphony Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Conductor presents Spanish Evenings With Manuel Barrueco, Guitar
Manuel Barrueco plays Rodrigo, plus Debussy, Ravel and Rimsky-Korsakov!
Legendary classical guitarist, Manuel Barrueco, joins the Greensboro Symphony for an evening of Spanish flair on January 18 & 20, 2018 at Dana Auditorium! Barrueco, internationally regarded as one of the most significant guitarists of our time, will perform the beautiful and beloved Rodrigo Guitar Concerto. The GSO will follow suit with a Spanish journey by way of Russia and France, featuring Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Capriccio Espangol,” Debussy’s “Iberia” and Ravel’s “Alborada del grazioso.”
Barrueco’s impressive career has led him to many of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Musikverein in Vienna, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Royal Albert Hall in London, Philharmonie in Berlin, Tetro Real in Madrid and Palau de la Musica in Barcelona. His unique artistry is continually described as that of a superb instrumentalist and elegant musician, possessing a seductive sound and uncommon lyrical gifts.
The Rodrigo Guitar Concerto, possibly the most famous work for classical guitar and orchestra, features one of the most recognizable melodies in the world, having wound its way into 20th century culture via jazz, film, and television media. Intended to depict the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, the timing of its composition following the Spanish Civil War and immediately preceding World War II have led many to speculate about a hidden meaning to the work. Rimsky-Korsakov, Debussy and Ravel, meanwhile, were all fascinated by Spain’s alluring exoticism, drawing on Spanish folk melodies, harmonic flavor and rhythms to weave authentic-sounding masterpieces, despite their Russian and French nationalities.
