Greensboro Symphony Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Music Director presents: The Great Tchaikovsky with Barry Douglas, piano
(GREENSBORO, NC) Paying homage to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the Greensboro Symphony presents The Great Tchaikovsky on October 25 and 27 at 8:00 p.m. at Dana Auditorium! Joining the GSO is internationally acclaimed pianist, Barry Douglas, performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2 followed by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8.
Barry Douglas has established a major international career since winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. As Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland and the Clandeboye Festival, he continues to celebrate his Irish heritage while maintaining a busy international touring schedule. He has performed with the London Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Berlin Radio Symphony, among countless others. In 2002, Barry Douglas received the Order of the British Empire in the New Year’s Honours List for services to music.
Douglas will appear on Tchaikovsky’s stunning Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Major, Op. 44. Celebrated pianist, Nikolai Rubinstein, who had premiered and harshly criticized Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto, begged the composer to allow him to premiere this work in reparation for his negative comments. Tchaikovsky agreed—but Rubinstein died just months before its successful premiere in 1881 with the New York Philharmonic.
The GSO will conclude the evening with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Op. 33. While this work tends to be overshadowed by his other symphonies, Beethoven’s 8th symphony is able to hold its own with humor, lightness, and an overarching essence of Haydn. Referring to it as “my little symphony in F,” Beethoven premiered this work in 1814 in Vienna. Beethoven believed it to be one of his finest orchestral compositions, preferring it even to his hugely popular Symphony No. 7.
