HPU Junior Recognized for Service with Newman Civic Fellows Award
HIGH POINT, N.C., April 11, 2017 – High Point University junior Jasmyn Alexander is a recipient of the 2017 Newman Civic Fellows Award from Campus Compact. This national award honors college student leaders for their dedicated passion to service, research and advocacy for challenges facing communities throughout the country.
Alexander, an exercise science major on the pre-physician assistant track from Winston-Salem, is a Bonner Leader at HPU. Through this program, she provides more than 200 hours of service to the local community each year.
“The privilege of becoming a Bonner Leader has afforded me the opportunity of enhancing my desire to make a change within my community,” she says.
She hopes to create sustainable changes in the High Point community by raising awareness of the importance of health, wellness and exercise. Alexander hosted a community-wide Zumbathon, and she is helping with the Macedonia Family Resource Center annual 5K race and Exercise Science Club and Employee Wellness 5K Walk/Run. Next year, she will complete a senior capstone project to help underserved community members get involved in a wellness program that promotes healthy living skills.
Newman Civic Fellows are recommended for the award by their college or university president.
“Jasmyn embodies the spirit of our university’s mission to prepare students to live lives of significance in our complex global community,” says Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU president. “Over the last three years, she has embedded herself in grassroots work with many populations in our community. She practices the kind of experiential learning HPU promotes for all our students, uniting her academic work with her passion to serve others.”
Alexander is featured on the Campus Compact national website along with other 2017 Newman Civic Fellows student leaders. She will participate in a one-year experience emphasizing a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate.
Campus Compact is a national coalition of nearly 1,000 colleges and universities committed to campus-based civic engagement. The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors one of the organization’s founders, the late Frank Newman, and is supported by the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation.
