A deputy commissioner with the North Carolina Industrial Commission has awarded plaintiffs $1,250,000 for the wrongful death of Sandra Gail Allmond and injury to Elijah Allmond following a May 23, 2010, crash involving a State Highway Patrol Officer at River Road and Bus. 85.
The Jamestown News received a copy of the findings made by Deputy Commissioner Robert J. Harris on Jan. 10, 2018. The trial took place July 10-14, 2017 in Charlotte.
In the suit, Gerald Allmond, administrator of the estate of Sandra Gail Allmond and Guardian ad Litem for Elijah Allmond, contended Trooper James D. Goodnight “breached the applicable standard of care of gross negligence,” which was the cause of the injuries sustained by the plaintiffs.
Sandra Allmond and Taylor Strange were killed after Goodnight’s cruiser hit Allmond’s car as she attempted to turn off Bus. 85 North onto River Road toward Jamestown. Injured in the crash were Elijah Allmond and Steven Strange, who were riding in Allmond’s car, and Goodnight.
