Letter to the editor: Kathy Manning
Kathy Manning’s debate performance showed her to be the smart, caring and inspiring person I have known and admired for more than 30 years. Throughout her Congressional campaign, I have been amazed by her ability to really listen. She has traveled the 13th District non-stop to meet her future constituents and hear what’s keeping them up at night.
For some of us involved in public education, that’s funding for schools, teachers and children. NC is ranked 22nd nationally in students graduating, sixth lowest in per pupil expenditure and the sixth worst state for teachers. This shortchanges our children and creates a vicious cycle – employers and employees refuse to move here, leading to even less funding to help our children.
Kathy Manning is committed work for a better education for all students, leading not only to more fulfilling lives for them, but also creating a desirable destination for employers, skilled workers who earn a living wage and a state we can be proud of. While it may seem naive to think she can make a difference in this environment, we can begin by electing thoughtful leaders like Kathy who are committed to working together to address the challenging issues we face.
