National Dance Day Returns to Greensboro July 27
GREENSBORO, NC – Greensboro Downtown Parks, Inc. is bringing its third annual National Dance Day celebration to LeBauer Park on Saturday, July 27. National Dance Day GSO will bring 13 North Carolina dance groups to the center of LeBauer’s Great Lawn to engage audiences in a truly unique cultural arts experience. Under Janet Echelman’s hanging sculpture, “Where We Met”, attendees will join professional dancers on the floor as active participant-performers in styles of dance representative of the diversity of our community – from Bachata to Ballroom, Streetstyle to Swing, and so much more. “National Dance Day is about bringing the community together on the same level. There is no stage, and no one is above anyone else. Bring your water bottle, wear comfy clothes, and come out ready to move,” stated Maria Gonzalez, longtime Dance Day partner and director of ClubFitness Greensboro.
In line with this commitment to the people of Greensboro, a new partnership between Greensboro Downtown Parks, Dance Project, and Strictly Social will bring wearable SUBPAC devices for members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community to join us in the celebration. SUBPACs sync with the music to produce vibrations that allow the wearer to experience sound in a new way, as it pulses through the body. SUBPACs will be available to check out throughout the event, and ASL interpreters from Communication Services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing will be on hand to provide additional assistance. This wearable technology will also play a central part in the immersive experience of the dance party led by Strictly Social DJs in the latter part of the day’s events. Interspersed with interactive choreography from JoyeMovement and Dance Project, this free form dance party will round out an incredible day of creative engagement for our community.
The partnership for National Dance Day GSO is made possible by grants from the Weaver Foundation, Lincoln Financial, and ECOLAB. The event will feature a vendor market and food trucks, offering plenty to do in between shaking your groove thing. DJ Mike Wawa kicks off the day’s celebration at 3:30 p.m. on July 27 in LeBauer Park, and we’ll dance into the night!
