Peppercorn Theatre at Kaleideum Plays on Essential Learning Skills with production of Lost & Found
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 4, 2018) —Peppercorn Theatre at Kaleideum will present Lost & Found beginning Saturday, April 14, at Kaleideum Downtown in Winston-Salem. The 45-minute show, designed for children ages 3-6 and their caregivers, follows two young siblings as they venture into the imagined world where all lost things go.
“You have a melody, Doggie’s Tune, that children both know and love,” says Colin Allured, Winston-Salem musician, songwriter, and composer of the original music for the play. “As the play goes on, it breaks down that tune. Audiences learn it in a very systematic way; they are literally learning about intervals and melodic phrases as they would in a music class.”
Learning strategies are at the core of Lost & Found, a play for young audiences created by John Bowhers and Harry Poster, with music and lyrics by Allured. The play, which premiered in April of 2017 at Peppercorn Theatre at Kaleideum, is inspired by the “Seven Essential Life Skills” identified in the research study Mind in the Making by Ellen Gallinsky. Mind in the Making investigates and categorizes the ways in which children (as well as adults) learn through play and become lifelong learners, by diving deep into themes such as Perspective Taking, Focus and Self Control, and Communication, among others.
Lost & Found models these themes on stage through a theatrical journey. Using games, music, and the transformation of everyday objects, Lost & Found explores what children do best … turning ordinary surroundings into extraordinary adventures.
Colin Allured reflected on his 5-year-old daughter’s behavior following the play’s initial run. “I would notice her reenacting scenes from the play. She would set out books and hop over them (a reenactment of a scene from the performance) and play with her grandmother in character. I’d hear her humming all the songs from the play. It became a real part of her life.”
Performances will take place April 14, 15, 21, and 22. Tickets are $8(+tax) for Kaleideum members and $10(+tax) for non-members.
