Peppercorn Theatre at Kaleideum to present Learn to Speak Doll
Peppercorn Theatre at Kaleideum will premiere Learn to Speak Doll in July 2018 at the Hanesbrands Theatre in Winston-Salem. This original production, commissioned by Peppercorn Theatre and written by Angelica Chéri, is intended for young audiences – ages 7 and above – and their caregivers.
New Play Is Inspired by the Legacy of Dr. Maya Angelou
The story centers around Cadence, a young Winston-Salem girl who moves into an upper-class neighborhood, as well as a new school, where she finds herself with rules and classmates that are very different from those she had previously known. Feeling totally isolated, Cadence discovers that the only person who can help her is a famous poet in a magical tea room filled with talking dolls.
At a time when bullying, racism, and the misuse of social media grab headlines, this tale about the importance of finding one’s voice and speaking from the heart emerges as both timely and timeless. As playwright Chéri explains, the work was inspired by the legacy of Dr. Maya Angelou. “When I first met Nathan Ross Freeman, one of Dr. Angelou’s production managers for her original play, he mentioned a striking collection of dolls in Dr. Angelou’s home. The dolls were of all different shapes, sizes, colors, and dispositions. After hearing [his] vivid description of the dolls, I immediately began thinking about Dr. Angelou’s passion for equality and desire for her students to commune with each other harmoniously, regardless of skin color. This is what Dr. Angelou stood for – harmony. These things birthed the inspiration for Learn to Speak Doll.”
Learn to Speak Doll will be performed for the general public on July 7, 8, and 13-15 at Hanesbrands Theatre in the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts, located at 251 N Spruce Street in Winston-Salem. Tickets for public performances are $10 (+tax) for Kaleideum members and $12 (+tax) for non-members. Visit www.peppercorntheatre.org for specific showtimes and to purchase tickets. Group performances will take place July 10-13, also at Hanesbrands Theatre. For group reservations and pricing, contact Corinne Bass at email@example.com.
About Kaleideum and Peppercorn Theatre at Kaleideum
Kaleideum was formed by the merger of The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks in July 2016. Kaleideum Downtown (formerly The Children’s Museum) was founded by the Junior League of Winston-Salem and opened its doors in 2004. Kaleideum North (formerly SciWorks), also founded by the Junior League of Winston-Salem, opened its doors as the Nature Science Center in 1964. The two museums merged into a single organization with a new mission – “Inspiring wonder, curiosity, and lifelong learning in our children and community through interactive play and discovery” – and the goal of eventually opening a new building in downtown Winston-Salem. Peppercorn Theatre at Kaleideum, which joined the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem in 2014, is the museum’s performing arts programming arm. For more information, visit www.kaleideum.org.
