Ragsdale High School Players Help Baseball Team Advance to World Series
The Greensboro Green 16U Colt All Star baseball team featuring three Ragsdale players swept 3 games in the East Zone Tournament at Stoner White Stadium in Greensboro last week to become one of 6 teams from the United States and four international teams to advance to the World Series in Marion, Illinois Aug. 3-8.
Rising Ragsdale junior, Derek Martinez and rising sophomore teammates, Win Scott and Chad Carpenter each figured in the victories scoring runs and pitching well.
The first victory was almost all Tigers on the mound as Scott started Thursday evening against the Kempsville All Stars from Virginia Beach and gave up only 4 hits and one run through five innings before leaving with a 2-1 lead. Greensboro exploded for 5 runs in the top of the 6th and Martinez pitched all but the final out giving up no hits or runs to help seal the 10-1 win. Carpenter and Scott both scored runs in the game.
The second game against Youngstown, Ohio was similar in that it was close going into the 5th inning before a four-run outburst helped extend a 4-1 lead to 8-1. Martinez scored on a wild pitch in the 5th inning and Carpenter pitched the 6th and part of the 7th yielding no hits, 1 walk and allowing only one run in the 8-4 victory.
The championship clinching game followed the pattern of the others with Greensboro clinging to a narrow lead over Youngstown who had emerged from the losers bracket. Leading only 1-0 entering the 5th inning, Greensboro scored two runs in the 5th, two in the 6th and one more in the 7th in route to a 6-0 win earning a trip to the World Series where they are scheduled to face Seoul, South Korea Friday at 2:30 est.
