The 26th Annual Human Race: A Community Fundraising Event Set for April 18 in LeBauer Park
GREENSBORO, FEBRUARY 6th, 2020 — The 26th Annual Human Race 5k is taking place Sat., April 18th 2020 in Downtown Greensboro at LeBauer Park. The 5k race is timed this year by Finish Line Timing, NC. The route includes a short route turnaround and the race is welcome to all including pets, children, walkers, less able-bodied individuals, and supporters. Gates open at 9 am and the race kicks off at 10 am. Be sure to bring your team spirit for your favorite participating non-profit, company and/or family!
The Volunteer Center has facilitated this event since 1994. The Human Race is a unique way for the local community to come together and fundraise for local nonprofits, agencies, schools, PTA’s, and churches. Fundraising events are expensive to produce. Upfront costs like venues, food, and rentals add up quickly, and indirect costs like staff time can utilize the majority of a nonprofit’s budget. The Volunteer Center has provided the platform for nonprofits to raise money from supporters near and far at this one event.
“This long-standing event has allowed local nonprofits to fundraise at little to no cost,” says Carley Swaim Walker, Executive Director of The Volunteer Center. “Since its inception, this event has raised over $5 million for the nonprofit community. We are reaching for a fundraising goal of $157,000 this year.”
Historically, about 100 nonprofits form teams and recruit members to fundraise for their missions each year. Dozens of companies have also formed teams to include their staff and employees to raise funds for causes that align with their values. Between 3,000 and 5,000 attendees have come together on race day to celebrate, run, walk, roll, and wag the course.
The Human Race will take place rain or shine and will include an afterparty on the LeBauer Park lawn including complimentary food from local supporters and restaurants. The children’s area will be open and the dog park welcomes four-legged friends. The afterparty includes music and fun for the whole family as well as a way for attendees to learn about the missions and impact of participating non-profits.
Registration for timed runners is $25 until March 1st, and then will be $35. Day of registrations are $40. Walkers and those utilizing the short-route turnaround will not be timed, and can register at no cost but are encouraged to make a donation at registration. All registrants receive a link for personal fundraising pages as well as a link for the fundraising page for the team they join. These links offer a way for people everywhere to donate and support the cause whether they are near or far, participating or not.
Awards include best times for the top three individuals in each age group and gender, top ten fundraising individuals and teams, most spirited team awards, and more.
