The UNC Clef Hangers Winston-Salem Concert Is Sun., Feb. 9 at Reynolds Auditorium
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (January 27, 2020) — The UNC Clef Hangers, the all-male and oldest a cappella group at UNC Chapel Hill, is venturing west for a Winston-Salem concert on Sun., Feb. 9, at 3 pm. The concert will be held at RJ Reynolds High School auditorium, the former high school of Wills Woodruff, a UNC freshman Clef.
The Acafellas, RJ Reynolds High School’s all-male a cappella group. will open for the Clefs.
“It’s really awesome to be able to come home and perform,” Woodruff said. “The energy in Reynolds Auditorium is always great, and I’m so excited that the Acafellas will open, since I was a leader of that group in high school, and my little brother is a current member.”
The UNC Clef Hangers were founded in 1977 by Tom Terrell, Manley Roberts and Barry Saunders. They performed their first concert in the spring of 1979 in their iconic vests and bow-ties, which are now a signature look for the group. The group performs in locations domestic and abroad, and have sung at UNC-Chapel Hill’s commencement since the spring of 2002. As with traditional a cappella, the Clef Hangers use no instruments when performing or recording albums. Carolina in My Mind, written by James Taylor, is the Clef’s signature song and is performed at every concert.
The Clefs were the final act at the recent RJ Reynolds A Cappella Jam for Hope. On January 31 and February 1, the group is hosting their own Winter Jam in Chapel Hill, in which a cappella groups from many different colleges and universities will perform over two days. After the Winston-Salem concert, the Clefs will travel to Charlotte on February 29 and Pittsboro on March 1. The final Spring Concert will be on April 19 at Memorial Hall in Chapel Hill.
“We loved coming to Reynolds Auditorium for A Cappella Jam for Hope and are thrilled to be coming back to the city so soon,” said Silas Nuemberger, The Clef Hangers’ Publicity Director. “We’re looking forward to a busy spring season!”
