The VF Foundation Announces Legacy Gift for the Downtown Greenway
GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 23, 2019) – The VF Foundation, the private foundation funded by VF Corporation, has made a $1.5 million gift to Action Greensboro to support the continued development of the Downtown Greenway.
VF Foundation and VF leaders were joined by local community leaders for today’s announcement at a meeting of Greensboro-based VF employees at the Koury Convention Center.
The legacy gift continues VF’s long-standing commitment to supporting the City of Greensboro in ways that enhance the quality of life for its employees and local residents.
“VF is deeply committed to the dozens of local communities where we operate around the world, and this is especially true in Greensboro where we’ve proudly provided financial support and employee volunteer hours to support numerous causes since we planted roots here in 1998,” said Steve Rendle, Chairman, President and CEO of VF. “We’re pleased to continue our history of giving with this gift from the VF Foundation to the Downtown Greenway.”
VF has been a long-time Downtown Greenway supporter. Company officials donated $250,000 to help launch the project’s first round of fundraising and has provided T-shirts for the annual Run 4 the Greenway fundraiser for eight years.
“VF Corporation, Action Greensboro and the City of Greensboro share a strong value that outdoors matter. Our 100-plus miles of trails and greenways and 8,500-plus acres of parks are unique assets that connect diverse people, neighborhoods and institutions of higher learning and set Greensboro apart from many communities,” said Susan S. Schwartz, executive director of The Cemala Foundation, chair of the Action Greensboro Operating Group, and chair of the Downtown Greenway fundraising committee. “This legacy gift will help ensure that Greensboro residents continue to have an exceptional quality of life.”
Construction is now underway for two critical segments of the Downtown Greenway. The construction on Smith Street between Spring and Prescott Streets will complete the northern section of the loop. The Murrow Boulevard section, where work began this spring, is the largest section of the project, running from Gate City Boulevard to the south and Fisher Avenue and Greene Street to the north. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2020.
Rendle continued, “When the idea for the Greenway was introduced nearly 20 years ago, it represented a bold vision to positively transform this city with a unique outdoor and activity-based cultural treasure. We’re excited to see it near completion so the Greensboro community – including our employees and their families – can enjoy it for many years to come.”
VF Corporation established the VF Foundation in 2002. Since its inception, the VF Foundation has issued more than 2,000 grants.
About Downtown Greenway
The Downtown Greenway, a collaborative project of the City of Greensboro and Action Greensboro, is a planned 4 mile walking and biking trail that encourages economic development, increases the tax base for the city, and improves quality of life for its citizens. This urban loop around the center city of Downtown Greensboro has enhanced the urban landscape with a green space that promotes fitness, connectedness and well-being for our residents and visitors in an aesthetically pleasing environment. The loop itself provides a unique opportunity for Greensboro to have the only one of its kind in the state and one of the few in the country. With its emphasis on public art, the Greenway tells stories and engages users of the trail in a unique and authentic way. In addition, with the connections to the extensive existing and planned trails systems in the city and the county, this loop will connect residents from all parts of the community and beyond. With 1 ½ miles built and open to the public, and another 1 ½ miles currently under construction, the Downtown Greenway is expected to be completed close to the end of 2020.
