    DJ PAPPY

    DJ handle: DJ Pappy

What it means: An old housemate and I came up with stage names for each other. Since I eat oatmeal for breakfast, take naps, have a tendency to be curmudgeonly when it comes to music and generally play retro tunes, I became Pappy. She now goes by DeeDee Sol and she will one day be my backup dancer.

    Real name: Adam T. Pyburn

What I play: Primarily retro world funk, but I often delve into soul, jazz and hip hop.

    Got in the game: 2008-ish

Why I do it: Because no one else was playing what I wanted to listen to.

Influences: DJ ChickenGeorge, Paris DJs, Quantic, Madlib

First pro gig: A wedding for friends of friends of friends in Durham.

Favorite albums: That’s a trick question, but a few of the many albums I can always fall back on (in no particular order) are as follows : Afro Soul-tet — Afrodesia , Oh No — Oh No vs. Now Again, Hugh Masekela — Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz, Mulatu Astatke & the Heliocentrics — Inspiration Information, Quantic and His Combo Barbaro — Tradition in Transition, Donald Byrd — Kofi and anything by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

Personal playlist: Along the lines of my favorite albums, i.e., lots of under-the-radar world funk, jazz, hip hop and soul.

    Website: DJPappy.com, facebook.com/ DJ.Pappy.NC

I’d like to add: Check out the website, and if you like what you hear please grace my Facebook page with a Like.
