The City of Winston-Salem released an interesting video Wednesday that visualizes the coming changes to Business 40’s path through downtown. “The City of Winston-Salem and the North Carolina Department of Transportation are developing a series of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements as part of the efforts to upgrade and streamline I-40 (Business) through downtown Winston-Salem,” reads a statement attached to the video. Existing pavement will be removed and replaced with new concrete. Significant changes will come to entrance and exit ramps, which are currently far too narrow and short to meet modern safety standards. The work will result in most of the bridges over the highway being replaced. “When those bridges are redesigned, bicycle and pedestrian improvements will be included to accommodate walking and cycling trips along and across the Business 40 corridor,” reads a statement on the city’s website. “Most notably, the City of Winston-Salem has proposed a multi-use path for cyclists and pedestrian that would parallel the highway from Lockland Avenue to Liberty Street, providing a safe and comfortable active transportation option with separation from motor vehicle traffic.”We’ve written extensively about the pending shutdown of Business 40 and the discussion regarding which streets should become one way/two way when the new ramp structure is in place.
