Well Water Sampling to be Conducted in the Airport Area of Guilford County (Health Information)
The City of Greensboro has conducted surface water sampling for Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at its water supply sources. The results showed that the surface waters near the Greensboro Airport have been impacted by these compounds. As a result, the City of Greensboro has taken measures to protect its public water supply. Currently, Guilford County and the City of Greensboro, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), are planning to collect groundwater samples to make sure that water supply wells in the area near the airport are not impacted by these compounds. This is a precautionary measure; at this time there is no data that shows water supply wells in the area have been impacted.
As part of this joint effort to evaluate any potential groundwater contamination in this area by these compounds, Guilford County Public Health will collect water samples from the wells in this area of the county. Area residents will be asked to provide permission for the collection, sampling and analysis of well water on their property. The resident does not have to be at the home to have the well sampled as the sample can be collected from a faucet at the well house or from an outdoor faucet. To collect samples, staff from Guilford County and the NCDEQ will first allow water from the outside tap to run for approximately 15 minutes. Staff will connect a garden hose to convey water away from your house during this time. Two small sample bottles will then be filled.
This sampling will be performed at no cost to the resident; and within 45 days of sampling, laboratory results along with a health risk assessment will be forwarded to residents whose wells are sampled.
Guilford County, the City of Greensboro, NCDEQ and NCDHHS staff will conduct a public information session on December 4, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Guilford College United Methodist Church, in the Fellowship Hall. The church is located at 1205 Fleming Road, Greensboro, NC 27410. The purpose of the public information session is to provide information about the surface water contamination near the Greensboro Airport and to provide additional information about the proposed sampling to be conducted by the County and NCDEQ. The public information session is a chance for residents to ask any questions and/or provide input about the contamination, potential health effects of the chemicals of concern and the proposed groundwater sampling.
